In Search of the NE Aegean: Samos, Patmos, Ephesus - Photography Trip

1 week: Samos to Samos (ISOTNEA)

We will tour majestic Samos, the holy island of Patmos and Turkey\'s Library at Ephesus, one of the eight wonders of the ancient world, \"In Search of the Real Greece.\" Rising with the sun, we\'ll chase \"to fos ellinikos,\" the Greek light, as it wraps around blindingly white Cycladic buildings and cerulean harbors filled with fishing boats of red, blue and green. We\'ll follow old Greek women shrouded in black and old Greek men riding their donkeys down cascades of marbled stairs. We shall seek out little know villages, where Greeks have thrived, prayed, laughed and danced for centuries. We\'ll watch the sun set into the Aegean sea. Later, we\'ll explore the clubs and tavernas, and burn the midnight oil.

We start in Samos from the port of Pythagorio, climbing high into the hills of Mt. Kerkis. It is said on Samos that if you haven\'t visited the mountain villages, you have not seen the true spirit of Samos. Then, we circle the island, exploring the port of Karlovasi, the villages of Marathokampos and rarely visited Drakei.

We shall journey by ferry to the holy island of Patmos with its beautiful village of Xora, its sacred Monastery atop the island\'s highest mountain and the Biblical \"Cave of Revelations\" of St. John the Theologian. Patmos is still pure, predominantly a religious island for the Greeks themselves and filled with life. Patmos is a vision of Greek life before the onslaught of tourism.

At week\'s end, we shall return to Samos to take a ferry to Kusadasi in Turkey and visit the beautifully preserved Greek ruins at the Library of Ephesus.

Our days will be filled with shooting in secret little hide-a-ways that I have discovered in my seventeen years of Greek travels.

At workshop\'s end, we will ferry back to Samos for a final day of shooting, critique, dancing and celebration.

All photographic medias, film or digital, are welcome. This is a shooting/adventure workshop. The processing of film is difficult as these islands have little water. We will have midweek and final critiques of workshop photography. Night photography is encouraged, but only balanced with nocturnal explorations of the kafenions and tavernas.

Lodging, continental breakfast, and transportation between and within Samos/Patmos/Ephesus are included.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be a AA class hotel with refrigerator, pool, balcony including Continental breakfast and all inter-island travel within and between Samos/Patmos/Ephesus, Turkey.
